Series Title

Women in the Spanish Monarchy

Thanks to an excellent education, the "cultured queen par excellence" as she was described, always demonstrated an intellectual curiosity that she would retain over the course of her life. She was introduced to music by her teacher Scarlatti, becoming not only a good performer but also a good composer. She was able to indulge in this passion at the royal court in Madrid, as well as setting a social precedent. Her enthusiasm for culture led her to take an interest in education in general, and especially women's education. Aware of the controversy that had broken out in the Spain at the time regarding the intellectual training of women and their education, she founded a boarding school to for the education of girls from noble families.
