Patinir, Joachim
(Bouvignes-sur-Meuse, 1480 - Antwerp, 1524)
Joachim Patinir, also called Patenier or Patinier (Dinant or Bouvignes ca. 1480 - Antwerp, 5th October 1524), was a Flemish painter of landscapes and religious subjects. He is considered a precursor of landscape painting as an independent genre. Continuing in the Antwerp Renaissance school of Gerard David, he was also influenced by Lucas van Leyden and Van der Weyden. In his paintings, the main theme is often relegated to the background in favour of a heightened role of Nature and the environment. He makes extensive use of the range of greens and compositions with high horizons.
Most of his works are housed in the Prado Museum, which held an exhibition of his works in 2007.
