Watteau, Jean Antoine
(Valenciennes, 1684 - Nogent-sur-Marne, 1721)
Jean-Antoine Watteau (Valenciennes; 10th October 1684 - Nogent-sur-Marne; 18th July 1721) was a French painter. He is one of the great geniuses of the late French Baroque and early Rococo periods. He is credited with creating the genre of the fêtes galantes: scenes of amorous courtship and leisure, endowed with an idyllic, bucolic charm and bathed in an air of theatricality. Some of his best-known themes drew upon the worlds of Italian comedy or ballet.
