Patrimonio Nacional acquires
In November 2025 Patrimonio Nacional acquired an important portrait of Charles of Bourbon, our Charles III, as Charles VII of Naples, executed by Neapolitan artist Giuseppe Bonito (1707-1789). Despite wearing a justaucorps and a waistcoat, the monarch is depicted as a soldier, with a steel cuirass and holding a staff of command, while a battle scene unfolds in the background.
The canvas comes from the collection of the VI Marquis of Benavites, Pascual Benito Belvis de Moncada (1727-1781). This is the finest version of this model, which enjoyed considerable popularity at the time and was engraved in Naples—though in bust format—by French artist Pierre-Jacques Gaultier.
Patrimonio Nacional restores
One of the latest pieces to be restored in the workshops of Patrimonio Nacional is this sofa. Dating from the late 18th century, it formed part of the furnishing of the quarters used by King Charles III at the Royal Palace of Madrid.
This piece is one of the finest examples of European court cabinet-making of its period, combining the exceptional quality of its timbers—most of them imported from the Americas—with the cabinetmaker’s outstanding craftsmanship and the originality of its design, distinguished by the use of volutes, spirals and interlacing motifs.
In the 19th century, the sofa’s back was completely reupholstered, obscuring its original design. The extensive restoration has reinstated the original gap between the back and the armrests, while restoring the green colour of the upholstery first used during the reign of King Charles III.
